REENGROSSED HLS 01-2947 Regular Session, 2001 HOUSE BILL NO. 2064 (Substitute for House Bill No. 616 by Representative Faucheux) BY REPRESENTATIVE FAUCHEUX CRIME: Provides for the crime of illegal training of dogs AN ACT To enact R.S. 14:102.12, relative to offenses affecting the public sensibility; to provide for the crime of illegal training of dogs; to provide for definitions; to provide for penalties; to provide for exceptions; and to provide for related matters. Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana: Section 1. R.S. 14:102.12 is hereby enacted to read as follows: §102.12. Illegal training of dogs A. No person shall illegally train a dog. B. For the purposes of this Section, "illegally train" means to train a dog to attack or kill a human being, another dog, or any other animal species. C. The provisions of this Section shall not apply to any of the following: (1) Any dog which is owned, or the service of which is employed, by any state or local law enforcement agency for the Page 1 of 3 CODING: Words in struck through type are deletions from existing law; words underscored are additions. HLS 01-2947 principal purpose of aiding in the detection of criminal activity, enforcement of laws, or apprehension of offenders. (2) Any dog the service of which is employed as a guard dog to defend livestock raised for commercial or subsistence purposes. (3) Any dog the service of which is employed as a guard dog to defend any school, place of business, or personal residence. D. The provisions of this Section shall not apply to the training of any dog for any of the following purposes: (1) Obedience training. (2) Agility training. (3) Conformation training. (4) House training. (5) Hunting or field trial participation. E. Whoever violates the provisions of this Section shall be fined not more than five hundred dollars or imprisoned for not more than six months, or both.
